Slabbing

What?: pottery made by hand with roll-out sheets of clay

Step 1

To start you need; a nice ball of clay and a slab roller or a rolling pin.

Step 2

Cover the ball of clay with the cloth and roll the wheel backward and foward to flatten the ball and lower the roller after each rolling. Repeat that process as many times as you need depending on the thickness of the clay you wish to work with.

Step 3

With a big smile and a lot of passion, Adit is acheiving step 2.

Step 4

Once the clay is flat, you can add all sorts of patterns on it. In the picture, we use ostrich feathers. To print the pattern or texture, you put your object on the flat clay, you cover it with the cloth and you roll it again in the slab roller.

If you want to make a bowl or a plate you put the flat clay in a bowl and you shape the edge with your hands.

Step 8

When you're satisfied with the shape of your bowl your job is done, you just have to be patient and let it dry!
